Markit reports - What's the recruitment market doing - in November?
Posted on 8th December 2016
The latest Markit report is now out. It shows a fall in the number of permanent placements across the economy as a whole in November. This is the second month in a row that has seen a fall. In contrast, the UK saw the fastest increase in temp appointments since February. As Gareth noted in a recent blog, in IT at least, there seems to be a trend towards more contractors being employed while employers wait to see what's happening with Brexit before making more permanent hiring decisions.
Key stats for IT in Scotland are as follows (where any figure above 50 indicates growth):
Permanent staff: 62.8
Temp/contract staff: 57.3
In contrast to Scotland, in the UK as a whole, perm demand rose quickly, to its highest figure since February, while temp/contract staff demand also rose at a quicker rate, reaching a seven-month high in November.
The equivalent figures for the UK are as follows (where any figure above 50 indicates growth):
Permanent staff: 61.3
Temp/contract staff: 55.5
As always, monthly snapshots are interesting but what matters is the picture over a longer period. What will be really interesting will be to see what the figures are like over the course of next year, as the details of what Brexit involves are revealed.
