Our Glasgow office is growing. In fact, by the time you read this we will have doubled our staff numbers in the west and our billings are correspondingly rocketing too. All good stuff, but it's dependent on getting the right people, which can be tricky. Ideally, you want someone who gets what we're trying to do (fits our culture if you like) and who also has a proven track record in recruitment. Someone like this young lady...

What other jobs have you done apart from being a recruiter?
I lived and worked in Spain for a couple of years, mostly in bars but also as a nanny where I was basically paid to hang around a pool all day. I then moved back home and headed to Uni and during those years I had a stint as a bingo caller (you get threatened by old ladies more than you would think) and I then worked in and managed a couple of sunbed shops. After I graduated I started a graduate management scheme where I basically worked as a taxi driver. I quickly decided that wasn’t for me and that’s when I moved into recruitment and found something I really enjoyed.
What it your biggest disaster at work (anywhere)?
Probably the biggest disaster I’ve ever had was when I was working over in Spain. I had had a bit of a late night before a Sunday shift and was pretty tired and not really concentrating. This lead to me pouring a whole bowl of boiling hot tomato soup into a customer’s lap. Safe to say he didn’t leave me a tip.
What makes a good recruiter?
There are lots of different qualities that make a good recruiter, but for me I think the ability to listen has got to be one of the most important. If you don’t take the initial time to listen to what your clients and candidates actually want, you are not going to get far at all. Time management and organisation are also important. We get pulled in so many directions during our day that if we don’t put some effective organisational and time management practices in place we can spend all day working really hard and achieving nothing.
Favourite food and drink and where in the world would you like to be when you are having them?
Perhaps not the classiest choice (no, it's not - Ed) around but my favourite food has got to be chicken wings and I would quite happily eat them every day. Throw in a vodka and coke and put me anywhere that has blazing sunshine and you won’t see me happier.
Recommend a restaurant and/or bar for us?
Viva Brazil – unlimited meat what more can I say.
What’s your view of the market just now – where are the real challenges?
I think the IT market in Scotland is a really interesting place just now, with both Glasgow and Edinburgh establishing great start-up communities as well as a buoyant SME & enterprise market. Whether you are interested in AI, Big Data, Cyber Security or Cloud projects, there is something for everyone. However, the skills shortages we have been seeing over the years are continuing to grow, making finding the right candidates for these roles tougher and tougher all the time. I think initiatives like Code Clan and Coder Dojo’s are going some way to address these shortages but a more concerted effort in early education is needed to prepare the future workforce for an even more digital world.
What do you think Be-IT can bring to the Glasgow market?
I think Be-IT bring something new and fresh to the Glasgow market that has been needed for a while. The team we are building over here are all passionate IT recruiters with extensive knowledge and experience behind us that allows us to deliver a truly value adding services to both our candidates and clients.

Favourite (work) website and why?
It has to be Linkedin – I know it gets a lot of bad press at the moment for turning into Facebook, but it is still a great way to reach out to candidates. There is also lots of great blogs and articles in new and emerging technologies which are great for keeping up to date with your industry.
Favourite techie gadget?
Not the most exciting choice in the world but it has to be my phone, I’m not sure how we all managed before we had the ability to obsessively check our emails and Facebook 100 times a day. Although, I’ve recently been renovating my house and I must say the electric sander is also a great invention!
