Steve Faull, AggrekoWe are always keen to increase the number of guest bloggers on our site.  So far, we’ve had some really interesting posts from a range of interesting people and consequently we think it’s only fair that we give them some publicity and tell you a bit more about them...so here goes!

The first person who falls (no pun intended) under the Be-IT microscope is Steve Faull, Applications Development Manager of Aggreko. Steve is based in Glasgow and has been with the company for seven years. However, when asked if this was the job he wanted when he set out on his career, I was surprised by the answer…

“I wanted to be a rock star. I didn’t go to university but instead played guitar in a band, gigging in and around Glasgow.  However, it was clear that the Hit Parade wasn’t beckoning, so I took a job with Ford at Dagenham, working in electrical engineering/electronics.  At Ford I saw computers being introduced and began to learn what data can bring to a business. AI was also emerging at this time and I was getting into programing. I took an Open University degree and this helped me make the transition into computing.  That said, my background in electrical engineering has, for obvious reasons, been very useful for my work at Aggreko.

“After Ford, I worked at Merrill Lynch in Glasgow, leading a small team on business intelligence platforms.  Then came the crash in 2008 and I had a stint contracting before moving to Aggreko.

“I really enjoy my work here. I’ve also been able to complete an MBA at Strathclyde University, where my dissertation was on the challenges of bringing big data into big firms.  It’s really interesting to see how academia and industry can work together and the big data scene is very strong in Scotland at the moment.

“Aggreko is, in many ways, a traditional big company.  However, we really do recognise the importance of technology and the focus is very much on practical applications and what benefits they can bring to the business.  I’ll be telling you more about some of our work in my blogs, but for me, advanced analytics (or big data if you prefer) are at the heart of what we are doing across the world.  Creating the capacity for our engineering colleagues to monitor and understand what’s going on in our generators across the globe is exciting work.  We’ve moved from being a reactive business, responding when something goes wrong, to a proactive business where we can see what’s happening and take action, and now we’re moving into the predictive phase, where our technology anticipates and makes corrections before someone can see there is a problem.  It’s an emerging field and we don’t have all the answers, but it’s a fascinating arena in which to work.  Sometimes, it feels as if every day is a schoolday!”
