Graeme HarperOur Glasgow office is going from strength to strength.  We've increased the number of consultants there and have had to move to a bigger room to accommodate everyone!  One of them is a young(ish) man who, before he came into recruitment, wandered the world for a year or so.  A keen student of Spanish, he brings not just lot of recruitment experience and enthusiasm but also an interesting and diverse background in a variety of other jobs before he joined Be-IT - as you're about to find out...

Name  Graeme Harper

Job title  Consultant

What other jobs have you done apart from being a recruiter?

I previously worked in finance and in an estate agency in Jersey.

What it your biggest disaster at work (anywhere)?
I locked myself in my bathroom before a big day of house viewings.  I then had to bang on the wall until the next door neighbour saved me by calling a locksmith to break into the house and sort it out.  That wasn’t the best of days...

What make a good recruiter?
The ability to listen and match up the roles to the candidate’s experience and requirements.  We’re not here to listen but then send people to roles that do not bear any resemblance with what they need/want  - but I have heard this does happen in some recruitment agencies.

Favourite food and drink and where in the world would you like to be when you are having them?
It’s hard to pinpoint my favourite, but I loved Bariloche in Argentina as it’s beautiful sitting having a steak and drinking red wine overlooking the lakes and the mountain range (agreed, it’s a great country with fabulous steak and wine – Ed).

Recommend a restaurant and/or bar for us?
One I have been in recently and can’t stop telling people about is the Non Viet restaurant in Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow.  It’s as close to authentic as I’ve tried here and great value.  If you like Asian food, give this a shot.

What’s your view of the market just now – where are the real challenges?
I am guessing there will be a recurring theme with this answer from anyone working in IT recruitment: the market is tough in particular areas of development, cyber security and the devops environment as well.  Sometimes the challenge can be finding the right fit for the team - and that 'fit' doesn’t always match up with the job description.  It's about knowing what’s available in the marketplace and understanding what resources are available to the client through support, training etc. to see if a suitable match can be found which will provide a long term solution.

What do you think Be-IT can bring to the Glasgow market?
This sounds very clichéd, however, having worked for another large recruitment company before Be-IT, I feel we offer a completely different option to clients and candidates.  Being a company specialising solely in IT means we’re perfectly positioned to react to changes in the market, tailor the options available to clients when vetting candidates (such as providing them with interactive CVs), so that the clients gain a deeper understanding of the candidate before going to interview. From the candidates’ perspective, we ensure they are aware of the right opportunities and that we are matching them to the right clients so it’s a win-win for both parties.

Favourite (non work) website and why?
Football365 forum.  It’s not just about football and it’s highly addictive!

Favourite (work) website and why?
Linkedin - it is a great asset to anyone in IT recruitment.

Favourite techie gadget?
Ironically, I’m not a really techie person, however my Macbook will do.  It’s about 6 years old now but I still love it and it’s been to many places around the world with me.
