Our People, Covid 19, Candidates and Clients

At the end of last week, you might have been forgiven for thinking the world was coming to an end. The Prime Minister’s announcement, supported by his two leading scientific experts, was followed by what seemed like every sporting, social and business event being cancelled for the foreseeable future. That we have a crisis on our hands is beyond dispute. For business leaders up and down the country, the question is, “what should we do?” 

From my perspective, as MD of Be-IT, this is first and foremost about people – our people, our clients and candidates – and how we can keep them well while continuing to keep the wheels of commerce turning.

It’s also about how we can offer some immediate reassurance about our capabilities which will, I believe, help us all adapt and continue to be successful, despite the downturn that’s probably coming down the track. And, as a tech business, this is about our software and how we make best use of it to enable all our people, candidates and clients to keep on working efficiently and safely.

At Be-IT we haven’t seen any slowdown in recruitment yet. This doesn’t just apply to the amount of business we are transacting, but it also applies to the behaviours we’re seeing.  That will change though.  The ways in which my colleagues and I work and the ways in which our clients work will, of necessity, have to adapt to new, rapidly changing circumstances. 

The good news is that we are well prepared. We have had the tech kit we need for just such a situation for well over a year. This means our systems and software are resilient and tested. Crucially, we are a cloud-based business. Moreover, we have had a formal, flexible-working agreement in place for all our staff for many years. Our consultants can access everything they need remotely and all of them have worked from home regularly in the last year - although I stress that, at present, we are still an office-based business and currently I intend both Glasgow and Edinburgh offices to remain open in the near future. 

That said, we do expect many IT people across the country to start working from home sooner than later (which is always useful if you want to have a chat with a recruiter) and this, I suspect, will become the new normal, in many cases continuing after the coronavirus crisis has abated.  

Just to reiterate – our people, our clients and candidates – are our priority.  We have invested in the very best IT recruiters in Scotland and that is our competitive advantage. Times will be tough, but we’ll get through this and come out the other side stronger and wiser for the experience.  I am continually reviewing the situation and as soon as it’s necessary to do so we’ll act fast and we’ll keep you informed.
