Name: Susie Toner
Job Title: Senior IT Recruiter
What other jobs have you done apart from being a recruiter?
I worked in a Banana Farm in the sunshine coast once, I lasted one day - banana farming is not my strong point!
What it your biggest disaster at work (anywhere)?
Banana farming; I almost chopped my friend’s foot off. . . .(I didn’t thankfully)
Do you think that techies make good recruiters, and if so why (or if not, why not)?
I think techies make excellent recruiters as long as they have good listening skills. Recruitment for me is about listening to the client and understanding the business/culture, then delivering to them what they need for their business.
Who in the Be-IT office makes you laugh, and why?
Caroline, as she comes out with really random stuff! Lol
Why is IT recruitment different from other recruiting jobs (e.g. High Street)?
It’s technical so you need to understand the technologies and the landscape, you also need to have a very strong network in this candidate-driven market place.
What is the funniest thing you’ve seen in your recruitment career?
People at nights out, too many stories to tell!
Favourite food and drink and where in the world would you like to be when you are having them?
I love a dark and stormy cocktail, (great shout – Ed) which I would have anywhere in the world, but my particular favourite places are Australia and Mauritius.
Recommend a restaurant and/or bar for us?
For food we are spoilt for choice in Edinburgh, particular favourites are Ting Tang Caravan and Timberyard for food. For cocktails I like Bar Soba and the Rutland.
What’s your view of the market just now – where are the real challenges?
Candidates. It's a very candidate-driven market and I am finding a lot of candidates turning down good perm offers in favour of freelance or contract work.
What do candidates need to do better to help you get them a job?
Communicate and be open and upfront about their motivations for moving and what they require from a new role.
Favourite (non work) website and why?
Is it acceptable to say Just Eat?
Favourite (work) website and why?
Linked in, excellent networking tool, with lots of information on trends and the IT market place.
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you’d buy?
10 year around-the-world trip!
