Edinburgh - Fully Remote
My Client have come through the Pandemic strongly and are in a very healthy position. Guess this is one of the first things you would want to know if considering a move to a new job at this time. They are hitting new records in terms of business performance on practicaly a weekly basis just now and overall business is up 20% today as opposed to pre-pandemic best results. So, is this a safe option to consider? Box ticked!
Is this a company who are bleeding edge in terms of technology and who would develop my technical skills and provide a place I can learn and flourish? Another good question so let me see if I can answer it like this. When I asked the current Platform Operation Manager about his experience of the company since he joined a couple of years back he told me this:
"The company has always got an eye on what's cutting edge and can give us the advantage and Senior Management are completely bought in to this. Personally, I have learned a ton from people around me and I though I was pretty experienced when I came in here and in terms of my career it's been a massive step forward". Powerful statements these and if I add that this hiring manager has been recently moved in to a more senior position then it allows you to see that there is progression from within to be achieved. Box ticked!
The company has a central Edinburgh office but hey, the world has changed and some people like and / or want to have flexibility to work from home. Does this job offer me this is another great question. The answer is yes, it most certainly does. You can spend every day in that Edinburgh office should you wish to but equally you can spend every day working from your home office. There will be the odd occassion when you need to be in Edinurgh office but we are talking here about potenitally a handful of times per year. So, where you work is entirely down to you. Box ticked!
So what technical skills do I need to be experienced in? AWS is a must. The company is fully on AWS and are currently migrating AWS platform from EC2 / Chef managed instances to Kubernetes. So, if you have Kubernetes that would be advantagous but if not then you will certainly become proficient with it in this role. Experience of Docker and any infra code tools like Terraform, Ansible or Chef will help your application. The JVM is written in Clojure so experience here is helpful but other languages will be considered.
The ideal candidate would have experience in most of the items listed below, but an inquisitive nature and a desire to learn new things would go a long way to covering any experience gaps.
- Experience of working with in-house applications built by an internal development team
- Experience of working with revenue generating applications and the expectations that go along with these (e.g. meeting SLA’s, understanding the cost implications of downtime etc)
- Linux Administration
- AWS Administration
- Coding / Scripting (Bash/Python or equivalent)
- Monitoring tools (Currently using Datadog & Newrelic, but experience with other similar tools is fine)
Desirable but not essential:
- Infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform, Ansible, Chef etc)
- Experience working with JVM based applications
This is a fantastic company with extremely clever people doing some stuff that, well, if you are in the world of technology, you will find pretty neat. I encourage you not to miss out and to get in touch with Stuart on 0131 344 4781 or submit your CV as soon as you are able.
